White Furniture

It has come to my attention that I really do have a strange love of white furniture.

Not all white furniture though, I don't have much love for the glossy variety.

I don't think we had too much white furniture growing up, but my bedroom furniture was definitely white, white wicker at that! So here is my love for white furniture, waving a little white flag and declaring awesomeness.

I have been searching furniture websites like there is tomorrow. I have determined that I have rather neutral and simple tastes and that what is in my head does not always exist in real life.

The Husband may have given me the side eye when I announced that the majority of my favourite furniture is actually from Ikea.  I don’t think he likes the sounds of this, but if we cant find it elsewhere why wouldn't we go to Ikea? Cheap and cheerful I say.I haven't had a piece break on me yet.

Little kids are just going to draw on it anyway if I remember my own childhood.

Maybe he knows that I am the Master Builder in our marriage and will be out of action so he may need to build, but Ikea have people who can build it for you!

Now - here are some pieces on my 'I like and if I don't find else where in better quality will buy' list:-

I think that a coffee table will be one of our last purchases though as our couch is already on the huge side, and our lounge is not.  We will see if we can ever fit one in otherwise will have to get side tables instead.

I like the idea of this one though as you can put pretty coffee table books in the drawer and look at them through the glass rather than on top of the glass.

I want a glass cabinet of some type to house our special objects such as the ‘good’ dining setting, cutlery, wine glasses, tea cups etc etc – you get the drill.

I think I really need to see them in real life though to determine the quality.  Freedom have one that I adore but I hate the colour wash of it.

I would like to put some different handles on these also. If you have seen these elsewhere, please drop me a comment!!

We are going to need more storage in the laundry too, I adore these being used for a linen cupboard and like to think that it force me to have a neat area but who am I kidding. I only use fitted sheets and cannot fold them nicely for the life of me.

Am unsure about getting a sideboard or TV unit, I think that we will have our TV mounted on the wall but I guess you need to put your DVD player and DVD's etc somewhere.

That's one I need to ponder further I suppose...

I don't need these chairs because we have a dining setting already but I think I may buy 2 just to have randomly as I adore them. Maybe if we put a study desk in then they would work.
Ikea Ingolf Chair

I do however need stools for the bench and these are the cutest I have seen. Will of course need little cushions on them but so be it.

Look how cute they look!

Our bedroom has a walk in wardrobe but The Husband has graciously offered to let me have it and he will use a separate one which we need to buy. I think that both our clothes can fit in the walk in as I am culling a lot but he clearly thinks my clothes are contagious and if he rubs his lovely stuff against mine it may turn polyester.

As he has so many shirts we need the wardrobe to have two rails, but if we don't get an Ikea one we may look at having a custom one built which will probably work out better as can have a section for his ties and what not but I have no idea how much such a thing would cost.

Life with so many clothes must be exhausting.

I love the idea of a big mirror leaning against the wall but I don't think it is that safe - so maybe we will have one hanging and fixed to the wall properly.

For some reason I am so incredibly excited about decorating the fire place mantle.

I want a big mirror above it, and have already selected some silver Vera Wang frames (gifts from our wedding) and candle sticks to go on it.

We need to decide which photos to put in the frames, but I am thinking family shots from our wedding would be nice.

Now, the house is quite old and doesn't have much storage in the bathroom so I was thinking I would either get a ladder shelf or the Hemnes shelves and put nice baskets on them so that we can have towels, products etc nicely presented.

I will need to measure the space that is left to decide on this though.

I really do love the look of these shelves actually. Plain and neutral.
I am all for rolling my towels as opposed to folding them - how about you?

We are yet to see an outdoor setting that we love and white will be a pain to keep clean so we are still looking.
Am hoping to find this and buy our white goods in the Boxing Day Sales!

I think I love white furniture because you are not limited the the colours in your art work, rugs, flowers, cushions and all that other random stuff that accumulates around a house.

So - what are your favourite furniture stores? I do admit that if I cannot see it on the website first, I usually cannot be bothered schlepping to the shops - especially with my belly weighing me down now.

  1. I wouldn't go white for an outdoor setting...you'll see too much dirt.

    Another Ikea fan here!

I love the rest of your ideas...hope they work out how you want them to.

  2. i love white furniture too, but really only in the family room, it is really functional, all my other rooms have solid wood and antique pieces. I totally agree with white just being the neutral and everything goes with it. I love that outdoor setting, it would be great on my enclosed green and white tiled verandah- am off to check it out

  3. Love what you have chosen! Nothing wrong with Ikea... only i dont think you get as long out of the furniture as you would a more expensive piece. Still with little ones, you may find it was a good idea not to spend too much on furniture so if they trash it, its not like you have spent two grand on a coffee table that needs to be replaced. I love white. We are currently building a three bedroom modern townhouse and to open it all up we are going white furniture and adding colour with all cushions, rugs, ornaments etc. We are looking at glass also for better use of space... not sure if we will do the glass though. Very exciting! Ive been checking out Freedom, Domain, Harvey Norman... all the larger furniture stores and some smaller boutique places. Still deciding and think will hold off until our place is close to finished and we have better perception of the space before we go crazy. Hard to visualise what its going to look like when all it is, is brick, wood and insulation. Love the storage ladders. I want one but wont have the space in our bathrooms.

    1. Thanks! I agree, if they trash it it can be replaced without me sobbing over it.

How exciting!!! I would love to build one day. Is it stressful?

  4. I lovelovelove Ikea! I'm not a snob about furniture at all, its decent quality for the price! Plus, who doesn't love a good trip to Ikea?!

  6. I love IKEA! There I said it :) It's even better if you mix it with a few more expensive pieces.

Great choices... you have inspired me to look into the bathroom storage ladder idea. The bathroom in our new place is newly renovated, but alas hardly any storage - clearly a man designed it for a man.

    1. It seems everyone loves Ikea!!!!

I will never be 100% happy with a bathroom until we (not that we have any plans) build a house and I could have complete control haha.

  7. I like white furniture too. In fact I despise dark furniture and wood furniture as it seems to age so badly.

As far as furniture stores go - I quite like Super Amart. Kind of cheap and cheerful like Ikea but maybe slightly better quality. I don't think there's anything wrong with Ikea at all though.

    1. I really do agree with you. Our dining set was a gift from my in laws and it is dark wood but I actually like it, plus it was sweet of them so no way I would replace it!

Never been there - will definitely check it out!

  8. i love all of these items! i am a huge ikea fan, especially for a young couple starting out. save the pricey items for when the kids are grown a bit and constantly worried your items will get damaged etc.

  9. I love everything white too. At the moment, all of my plates, mugs etc are white. When I buy, I think we will go with white furniture too.

    1. I am thinking I will get all white plates etc when we move too as we have 3 sets at the moment with different patterns and it is ridic. At least if you break something they are easily replaced!

  10. In our new apartment we have a walk-in (mine) and a normal cupboard (his) in the master. When I offered him some room in mine he said that the RL didn't like mixing with Target, bwahaha. Clearly our men have this in common?

So, here's my schtick with IKEA: I think it is awesome. I just think that they key is customising it a bit and making it your own .e.g changing knobs (haha, knob), adding wallpaper linings, adding cushions, using vintage and thrifted decor pieces. My bestie is an interior decorator and she agrees. She works for a very exxy homewares company and design firm and they still use IKEA all the time because it is a great blank slate and it is affordable for more clients than just their high ends ones. Like polyester stuff from Tarjay, it's all about how you style it, IMO.

    1. HA! They definitely have that in common!!

Agree that you need to gussy them up a bit, I already have my eye on some handles etc so that should help! Style is key. I hope that the image I have in my head works in real life.

  11. I love antiques and vintage stuff that's been gussied up and recovered.

My favourite shop is Black and Spiro. They have the best fabrics EVER.

    1. Me too! I think that whilst the kids are young we will have easily replaceable stuff though!

  12. I've got the white coffee table with the glass and drawers. It's great and will be good for keeping your things safe from your little one(s) fingers when their old enough. The glass is also really easy to lift up and clean around. My little nieces have sat on this table, we've moved in right left and centre and it's still in one piece ;)

  13. I am an ikea fan too. But all that white with a baby?? I guess it's not expensive stuff so if it gets ruined, drawn on, etc. it's not the end of the world... We replaced our couches recently with chocolate brown leather. Practical and shows absolutely nothing.

    1. Our couch and dining table are dark so they are probably the most likely to be drawn on but as you said - if they get ruined at least its only cheap stuff!

  16. love that cabinet for the laundry. How do people keep things so neat? I don't know many people who can fold fitted sheets neatly!

  17. Haha you sound like me, my bf complains every time i look at white furniture for our house!
Just thought i'd let you know Ikea do custom made wardrobes and they're really really nice! My parents have them (my mum has expensive taste so I can assure you they don't look cheap and tacky!) They make them up to order with however many shelves/tie spots etc that you want :)

  18. I'm the same! I love white too. Currently we are living in a 2 bedroom apartment and while I adore the furniture in a lot of the higher end furniture stores the reality is a lot of it is sized for houses and big ones at that so it doesn't fit!

    Ikea is great.

We had trouble trying to find something suitable for our dining table and I ended up just getting the Melltorp for $49. It seats 4-6 but the best thing is how easy it is to clean and it doesn't scratch!

I also love the Expedit series for its various functions. We have it in our girl's bedroom for storage and also use it as a TV console. It's very easy to wipe away grubby hand prints.

    1. This is another part of my reasoning, we will only live in this house for 2-3 years and then upgrade to a proper big family home so will need new furniture all over again!

      Great bargain!!

  19. I am all for white furniture too and love your ideas. A neutral palette is perfect for showing off all your other items like artwork, flowers, knick knacks etc. Helps to make the house look less cluttered too I think.

My boyfriend has a this thing for darker timber and it drives me craaaaaazy. I will either replace or paint each item in time. He also doesn't keep his clothes in the same wardrobe as me. We use to share just a double wardrobe when we lived in an apartment but now I have claimed the 3 built ins in our bedroom and have banished him to our spare bedroom. That's what he gets for hanging his t-shirts facing the wrong way! Or putting the hanger curved side facing the back.
So jealous of your walk in though!

    1. Oh man. The Husband puts his hangers the wrong way also!! It drives me INSANE. I cannot deal with it. We have never shared a wardrobe as he has the spare room but now that 90% of my clothes are in storage I have an empty wardrobe so he jams stuff in there and the hangers are my breaking point.

He also likes dark wood or black. Not my taste what so ever.

  20. I love IKEA, but Mr-B refuses to go. If I want to buy something from IKEA I need to know what it is in advance so we can go, suss out where it is for the aisle number, pick it up and get out of there as quickly as possible!

    1. It is such a drainer actually going there isn't it? I feel like they pump a gas into the air that makes you so drained!

    2. Absolutely! I usually try to go on a weekday night - much quieter than a Saturday and then you can go home and sleep it off!

I think the trick with IKEA is to have a mix ... bit like a good wardrobe really - a mix of high and low end hahaha

  21. I love white furniture! Currently we have this ugly orangey timber furniture setting which belongs to the company, so we can't change it. Our couch was THE ugliest thing you've ever seen (think yellow and blue 80's triangle pattern) after a year of wheedling for a new one (since it had cigarette burns all over it- none of us smoke!) they deigned to change the cover, so it's now plain chocolate brown. Not the best, but a vast improvement. I'm on the lookout for blue/turquoise finishings. But I'd LOVE white furniture!

I'm sure Oprah did a video on YouTube about how to fold fitted sheets... and, when you do, keep them inside the matching pillow case :)

  22. I am OBSESSED with white furniture!! OBSESSED!! I cant wait to own my own house and be able to decorate properly!

  23. I bought all-white IKEA furniture for my bedroom when I upgraded from all the hand-me-down furniture I'd had since I was 13. Most of it I actually scored on eBay almost new. I'm (sadly) still living at home while I finish my studies and didn't want to invest in furniture since I plan to move out as soon as I'm done, and depending on where I moved to (and who I moved in with *cough*) I have no idea what furniture I'd be likely to take with me.

But the colour was non-negotiable. There's something so refreshing about white furniture. Especially for a bedroom, I think. Peaceful for sleeping. I love these pieces you've chosen. Obviously there's the cheap IKEA and then there's the IKEA stuff that's actually quite decent quality. And if you DO get them to build it for you it's done right and even better.
